According to the results of the latest Afrobarometer survey in Mauritania, access to education remains the most important challenge related to gender equality that the government and society must address.
Men benefit from secondary and higher education more than women, and there are more women than men who are illiterate in the country.
Moreover, Mauritanians do not fully embrace the principles of equality in terms of access to employment and land.
While they support the idea that women should be eligible for political positions as much as men, many also believe that women could face criticism or harassment.
Lastly, citizens are undecided about approving the government’s efforts in protecting women’s rights and are divided when it comes to calling for more efforts to promote gender equality.
