According to the latest Afrobarometer survey, Mauritanians feel free to express their opinions, except when it comes to political topics.
Moreover, the majority of citizens believe that the media is free in Mauritania and support press freedom against the possibility of the government banning media content it disapproves of.
Mauritania’s commitment in 2021 to implement a series of proposals to strengthen freedom of expression, including the establishment of the National Information Council and improving access to public information, appears to be yielding results. However, further efforts are needed to liberalize political debate so that citizens can fully enjoy freedom of expression.
